Reacting to the achievement, Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO, PhelisaMangcu, lauded the community members and municipalities who make the prestigious status attainable year after year and thanked WESSA for championing ecotourism. She made special mention of the lifeguards who protect the beaches andsaid that the Blue Flag status is one that gives holidaymakers peace of mind that as scenic as the KZN South Coast beaches are, that they are also safe and managed responsibly, with due regard given to strict water quality, education, environmental and safety criteria.

The announcement comes ahead of the December holiday season and covers the 2018/9 South African Blue Flag season, which officially starts on 1 November 2018 and runs until 31 October 2019.

A total of 9 KZN beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status, with 7 of them on the KZN South Coast. These are Hibberdene Beach, Umzumbe Beach, Southport Beach, Lucien Beach in Margate, Ramsgate Beach, Marina Beach and Trafalgar Beach.

What sets the KZN South Coast apart from other destinations, is that it has the distinction of all of its Blue Flag beaches being permanently managed 12 months a year, as opposed to only seasonal, which with some beaches can mean as little as 2 months per year. It also makes the KZN South Coast the destination with the highest number of Blue Flag beaches permanently managed on the African coastline.

Vincent Shacks, General Manager of the Ecotourism unit said that WESSA is “especially inspired by those sites where municipalities, the business sector and local residents are all working together to maintain this standard of excellence.”
