Based on Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN) statistics from 2013 to 2017, the South Coast has shown remarkable resilience and has managed to remain one of South Africa’s most popular coastal destination.

In their 2013 report, TKZN indicated that some 4777 000 domestic visitors came to the South Coast. With slight reductions in 2014 and 2016 there were major improvements in visitor volume in 2015 and 2017 during which some 656 000 visited the Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom.

Over a five-year reporting period there has been an average 7.7% growth visitor volume mainly from the holiday/leisure market and the prominent Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) segments.

Commenting on this trend Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO Justin Mackrory said “Analysis of the TKZN figures has been very encouraging to us and the work we do with our local tourism practitioners. Our destination has shown that there is sustained appeal for the various segments and interest niches that respond to our marketing campaigns and the numerous events that take place here.”
Mackrory did also caution “Whilst these results are motivational, we do however anticipate a reversal for 2018 due to the on- going entrenchment of the national economic situation and consumer reticence following from the now rectified water supply issues in parts of the destination”.

“We are confident however that the combination of our outstanding beach assets and exceptional eco-cultural experiences along with our acceptance as being a substantive value for money destination may counter any severe drop off in visitor volumes in 2018/19” he added.
