Hibberdene is considered the gateway to the Hibiscus Coast of Kwazulu Natal. It is a seaside town situated 97 km south of Durban, halfway between Scottburgh and Port Shepstone.

It was named after C. Maxwell-Hibberd, the former postmaster-general of Natal. It is known as an affordable destination and for its beaches. Hibberdene has a shark netted blue flag beach which is safe for swimming.
Hibberdene also has a popular Ski-Boat launch site.
